Isaiah 53 – By Jesus’ wounds you are healed

Do you need healing? Do you long to be healthy and fit? Then there is good news for you: Jesus is your healer!

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53,5

If you are sick, that is the truth you need to claim for yourself. By Jesus wounds you are healed! The doctor may have given you a negative report, maybe he even robbed you of any hope that it will ever get better with you. Jesus also gave you a report, namely that you have been healed by his wounds. Now you have to decide which report you believe: the report of the doctor or the report of Jesus? Sometimes it is hard for us to believe the invisible. Having the disease in sight and feeling all the symptoms often seems so much more real than the fact that by his wounds we are healed. But faith is about believing what you can not see yet.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11,1

Faith sees the invisible. If you can see something you don’t have to have faith for it. Believing for healing means to accept the truth of Jesus and to turn your eyes away from the sickness and towards Jesus. You consider Jesus’ word as true that by his wounds you are healed. You claim healing for yourself by thanking Jesus that you are healed. The same way you receive a gift from someone and thank the person for it, you receive healing from Jesus and thank him for it. And when doubts arise, you place yourself on the foundation of the word of God and speak out the truth over your situation.

Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Luke 18,27

There are no hopeless cases with God! The doctor may have told you that there is no hope for you. But Jesus tells you that it is not a problem for him. The doctor can not, but Jesus can! You can not, but Jesus can! When facing sickness, turn your eyes to Jesus and believe his report. By his wounds you are healed! Hold on to it and refuse to let go. Everything is possible with Jesus and he knows how to restore your body. You don’t have to know, understand or fulfill it, your part is to believe Jesus. Do not stress, rest in the knowledge that by Jesus’ wounds you have been healed. And then you just thank him for it. Healing is not a work that you have to fulfill, but a gift that you receive. Gifts are received by saying thank you. Thank Jesus that by his wounds you are healed!

Isaiah 53 – The punishment is on Jesus, not on you

Many people today still believe that God would punish them with some things, even that he would impose sicknesses on them that they have to carry as punishment. But the bible shows us a completely different picture.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53,5

The punishment is on Jesus, not on you! God never punishes you with sicknesses or anything else. It is important to know the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant. In the Old Testament beating and sickness were the consequence of disobedience and man’s rebellion against the law. The law worked in the way that blessing followed keeping the law and curse followed breaking the law. But today you live after the cross under the new covenant of grace. The cross makes all the difference.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5,21

God made Jesus to be sin for you and me, so that you and I would become the righteousness of God in Jesus. Jesus took sin and its consequences upon himself and bore it representatively for us. He was the one who kept the law. He did what we could not do. Grace did what the law could not do. The law shows you what you do wrong, but it has no power to save you. Therefore, you need Jesus, your saviour.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8,1

As believer you are in Jesus and hence there is now no condemnation for you. This means that when you sin, you look to the cross, to what Jesus did for you. There is no punishment and no condemnation for you anymore because God put the punishment at the cross on Jesus. You are free! The knowledge of the punishment being on Jesus gives you peace. Thus, when your body is afflicted by a sickness, do not accept it. Keep in mind that the punishment and therefore also this sickness is on Jesus, not on you. Just say: “Thank you, Jesus, the punishment is on you, not on me. You bore this sickness. What you bore, I don’t have to bear anymore. Thank you, that you never punish me with sickness, but you have set me free from sickness. Amen.” Replace the lie, that God punishes you with sickness, with the truth, that God put the punishment on Jesus and set you free from sickness. God never punishes you! The punishment is on Jesus, not on you!

Isaiah 53 – What Jesus bore, you don’t have to bear anymore

Did you ever hear that you had to bear sin for the glory of Jesus? Of course not! We know that Jesus bore our sin at the cross of Golgotha. Through his blood we have been cleansed and we are forgiven. Strangely enough, many people, when it comes to sickness, think that they have to bear their sickness for the glory of Jesus. But the bible says something very different.

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. Isaiah 53,4

Jesus bore your sickness! What Jesus bore, you don’t have to bear anymore. You never ever have to bear any sickness for the glory of Jesus. Jesus on the cross was not our example, but our substitute. Representatively for us, he took sin and sickness upon himself. Representatively means he did it in your stead. It means what you and I deserved was laid on Jesus so that what you and I didn’t deserve, namely forgiveness and healing, was laid on us. Jesus took the place of you and me so that we are free from sin and sickness. It does not glorify God if you believe you had to bear sickness. If we had to bear sicknesses ourselves, it would be a slap in the face of Jesus, who suffered unspeakably when he took our sicknesses upon himself on the cross. Jesus bore our sicknesses so that we don’t have to bear them. By believing that Jesus bore your sicknesses, you honour Jesus and his work at the cross.

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. Romans 8,11

The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. No matter what sickness may afflict you, Jesus bore it so that you never again have to bear it. Your sickness was nailed to the cross. Jesus, the great physician, lives in you. Where Jesus is, sickness must give way. Sickness can not persist in the presence of Jesus. Do not put up with sickness in your body. You are destined to live a life of abundance and this includes a healthy body. Decide to believe that Jesus truly bore your sickness and therefore you no longer have to bear it. Simply say: “Thank you, Jesus, that you bore this sickness. What you bore, I don’t have to bear anymore.” Sickness belongs at the cross and not in your body. What Jesus bore, you don’t have to bear anymore.

Isaiah 53 – Believe the message

Isaiah 53 is probably one of the most famous passages in the bible. Isaiah lived long before Jesus, but he prophesied what Jesus would do for you and me at the cross. This chapter reveals lots of wonderful things about healing.

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. Isaiah 53,1-3

Isaiah 53 begins with the question: “Who has believed our message?” The bible is full of wonderful promises of God. But for you to have a benefit off it, you need to believe what God says.

For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Hebrews 4,2

“They” refers to Israel. They didn’t believe what God said and therefore the message they heard was of no value to them. It is your decision if you want to believe God or not. Faith begins with a decision. You can decide whom or what you believe, and you can decide whom or what you believe more. The doctor may have given you a negative report, but Jesus says that he is the doctor who heals you. Now the question arises whom you believe more: The negative report of the doctor or Jesus, your doctor that never fails?

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Romans 10,17

Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Actually, it is expressed even more precisely, namely by hearing the word of Christ. You live under the new covenant. Engage in what Jesus did for you on the cross. See Jesus in his beauty and grace and depend on him having paid the full price for your salvation. After the cross it is no longer about what you have to do, but rather what Jesus has done. Fix your sight on Jesus and feed your faith by hearing good messages of grace. Fill you heart and your thoughts with God’s thoughts about you, how much Jesus loves you, how completely you are forgiven, how highly favoured you are in Jesus, the beloved, and how much Jesus wants to bless you. You are God’s beloved child and he whishes for you to believe him. To believe is essentially nothing else than accepting God’s word as true. The basis for your faith must never be experiences, but solely God’s word. His word is the unshakable basis that withstands and won’t waver in the storms of life. Today, decide to believe Jesus more than anything else.

It is written

It’s important to know, how you can handle challenges and problems in life so that you will be victorious. Jesus showed us how it’s done. When Jesus was in the desert he was tempted by the devil. First the devil told him to command the stones to become bread, then he prompted him to throw himself down from the temple and at last he wanted Jesus to worship him. Jesus’ answer to all these temptations was the same:

Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. Matthew 4,10-11

Jesus‘ answer was always: It is written! He didn’t argue with the devil, but used the one instrument that would silence the devil: the word of God. The same way we should handle problems, challenges, doubts and fears in our life. Counter these things with the word of God and circumstances must bow to the word of God, just as the devil left Jesus because he can’t counter anything against God’s word. Jesus used the word of God, was victorious and angels were ministering to him. This raises the question what is so special about the word of God that drives all adversities including the devil himself back.

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. John 17,17

Here we find the key: The word of God is truth! Wow, do you know what this means? We are so often concentrated on what we see, hear or feel. All these things may be real, but the truth is the word of God. This means there is more than the visible world. If God’s word is truth and you don’t see this truth in your life yet, it doesn’t mean bad luck for you and it’s not working for you. It only means you stand on God’s word and counter your circumstances with: It is written! Don’t let adversities scare you off but use the word of God boldly.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4,12

God’s word is living and powerful. It is so mighty that nothing can stand against it. Swing your sword and see how Jesus leads you to victory! The bible calls the word of God the sword of the Spirit and this is part of the armor of God which God gave you so you are victorious in life (Ephesians 6,17). Whatever your challenge is, look up bible verses that suit your situation and use them. Maybe your bank account is in the red. Use the word of God: It is written: And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4,19). If a sickness is ailing you, use the word of God: It is written, with his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53,5). Maybe you long for a spouse, use the word of God: It is written, it is not good that the man should be alone (Genesis 2,18). Whatever it is, counter your problems with the word of God and live victorious. For Jesus always leads you to victory!
